Our research is focussed on the perception of pain in the human brain. We are using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging -fMRI- and Electroencephalography -EEG- to study the processes that generate a subjects’ individual percept of pain. We are pursuing two tightly connected lines of research:
Which processes in the brain represent successful pain relief? The processes might be targeted in future therapeutic interventions.
The processing of pain is complex. Neuroimaging studies have revealed several contributing brain regions; the cortical processing can be as unique as the personality of the individual. We want to explore the individual cortical activity patterns of pain processing that reflect this uniqueness.
